the legend about Lorelei
In the German town of Bacharach-on-the-Rhine, there dwelt a young maiden of immense beauty. All men loved her, but she set her heart upon just one man, a common sailor, and she was faithful to him until the river claimed his soul and he never returned.

Yet her beauty remained, and was so enchanting that despite her faithfulness to her lover even in death, men were continually drawn to her. The effects of such innocent beauty lead to charges of enchantment. At length, some villagers brought her before the local bishop on trial of witchcraft, for the sentence of death.
The pious and severe bishop listened to her case intently, but when she pronounced, "I cannot continue like this! My eyes are the destruction of the man who looks into them; yet, I have loved only one man, and he left for a distant land to die. Please release me of this life!" the bishop's heart softened with sympathy and he found her innocent.
But being aware of her gifts, as a precaution against further problem, he recommended her to a nearby convent to take the veil.
Lost in her grief for her lost lover, the Lorelei pleaded the bishop to release her from life, but the good judge refused. Instead, he assigned the barony's three most trusted knights to escort her to the convent.

On the way, they passed a steep, rocky cliff (later called St. Goar), where Lorelei stopped them saying, "Please, let me climb the cliff and have one last look into the Rhine, whence my lover was taken." Unable to deny her this last tender wish before the cloister, the three knights tethered their horses, and the four of them climbed with her to the top of the cliff.
Standing at the edge of the precipice, Lorelei tossed her golden hair in the rising wind and setting sun and pointed down the river, "See that distant boat on the Rhine. The boatman there is my lover!" And with no further warning, she leapt out from the cliff and dove straightway into the river, never to be seen in mortal form again.

Some say that the Lord of the River took pity on her and transformed into a beautiful fairy with fishtail (whom some call 'mermaid';), whose sweet singing enchanted passing sailors and their ships toward her perilous rocks. Others say that she joined the Rhinemaidens, magical folk that dwelt in the depths of the river, guarding a fantastic treasure there, discovered only by great heroes (to their woe, for the treasure was cursed,) all of them wielding great powers of spiritual knowledge that we allegedly all hold deep within the subconscious mind.

Whichever parts of the story are true, some things are certain: Love, beauty, music, magic, innocence, tenderness, faithfulness and resurrection all surround the story of the beautiful, but forlorn maiden, Lorelei.
